From "Why Run?" to Utter Confidence: My 30-Year Journey to the Barbell

I’ll be honest: in my early 20s, I thought my mom was crazy.

She had just started making major lifestyle changes to prioritize her health.  At the time, my family only viewed exercise through the narrow lens of weight loss. I would joke with her, "Why would you want to run when you can just take the car?"

Eventually, my skepticism turned into curiosity, and I joined her. We fumbled through aerobics classes and signed up for local fun runs where we, very often, came in dead last. But those last-place finishes built a foundation of resilience I didn’t know I needed.

The Spunky’s Gym Era

We eventually found ourselves at Spunky’s Gym in Clawson, MI. It was a women-only gym, but it wasn't light. Spunky showed us the ropes: dumbbells, barbells, and those heavy, plate-loaded machines usually reserved for the serious lifters in most other gyms.

I was a regular at Spunk’s for a long time. I had the foundation, but I didn't have a plan. I’d show up a couple of times a week, but without a clear strategy, my progress was inconsistent. When life got in the way: marriage, children, a demanding career in the automotive industry, my workouts were often the first thing to go. Without seeing consistent results, it was hard to stay motivated when things got busy.

Fitness as the Key to Adventure

Despite the inconsistencies, that initial spark started by my mom never went out. It allowed me to say yes to life for decades. It took me through:

  • Martial Arts: Years of Kung Fu, Boxing, and Krav Maga.

  • Endurance: Crossing the finish line of a 50k ultramarathon.

  • The Open Road: Completing multi-day cycling trips across Michigan.

I eventually realized that physical fitness isn't just about the size of your jeans; it is the only way to ensure you keep having adventures as you age.

The Utter Confidence Pivot

When the opportunity came to leave the corporate world, I didn't just want a new job, I wanted to share the strategy I had finally discovered. I earned my certifications in personal training, nutrition, and group exercise to bridge the gap between "just showing up" and training with intent.

Today, I’m not just going along with a workout. I’m hitting new PRs and helping other women realize it is never too late to trade "gym-timidation" for Utter Confidence.
