Redefining Strength in the Second Half of Life

There is an unwritten rule in our society that as we age, we need to slow down because our bodies have become fragile. This is especially true for women. According to research by AARP, 68% of older women have been told to take it easy and avoid physical strain, while men of the same age are more often praised or encouraged for staying active.
Yet, a 2024 study in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology found that women who strength train 2 to 3 days a week experience a 30% lower risk of cardiovascular death. Furthermore, research from the NIH and NASM shows that heavy lifting actively reverses the bone loss leading to osteoporosis, while slashing the risk of Type 2 Diabetes by 40%.
This belief that women become frail as they age isn't just outdated, it is actively destroying women’s health.
I am so proud to coach three women who are completely rejecting the "slowing down" narrative. On August 8th at the Michigan Senior Olympics, I watched them step onto the bench press and deadlift platforms with total confidence. They worked hard for that moment, and the energy in that room was unforgettable. Not only did our team cheer each other on, but we cheered for every woman competing, and they cheered right back for us. Seeing so many women over the age of 50 powerlifting was pure inspiration.
At the end of the day, our Utter Confidence team walked away with eight gold medals and one silver medal across the Bench Press, Deadlift, and Ironman events.
Those medals are tangible proof that strength has no expiration date. Mid-life and beyond is not a season of winding down. It is a season of stepping into your power, discovering what your body is truly capable of, and realizing that your strongest days might very well be ahead of you.
To every woman who has ever thought it’s too late to start, or that heavy lifting isn't for someone her age: let this be your invitation. Your body is resilient, capable, and ready for so much more than you think.
If you’re ready to rewrite your own story and build strength on your terms, there’s a spot waiting for you at Utter Confidence.
